The Location
From the seafront tavernas and bars, and the organized beaches of the neighboring area you will enjoy one of the finest sunset in Greece. Built amphitheatrically above the River Smynos, this is a Maniot Bardounochori—one of the group of villages north of Mani or in northern Mani (there is disagreement about which) in the region of the castle of Bardounia in Agios Nikolaos. A little farther north, between Melissa and Archontiko, we can find the Vasilopoula cave and the Stara Bridge, a preserved monument with important architectural value.
The road descends sharply after Archontiko and forks off in three directions: to the northwest toward Melissa, north toward Prosili, and east toward Sina. At this point you will see the old wooden bridge over the River Smynos, which is still accessible to cars.
The walk through the gorge of the Smynos river is a lovely excursion. Along the way, you can see remnants of ancient monuments, several of them related to the ancient irrigation network of Gythio. There are also natural attractions, including the Cave of the Princess (Vasilopoula). To get there, follow the riverside path from Stara Bridge to the right for 300-400 meters.
The dilapidated watermill of Grafos on the bank of the River Smynos is a few meters after Stara Bridge, across the river from the Turkish Outpost and Customs House. It was the corresponding Greek outpost, and according to tradition, it was provided as a guarantee for the payment of wages to General Makrigiannis.
The renovated school. The first in the Bardounia region, it was founded in 1843 by Independence War fighter Panagiotis Giatrakos. It is situated in the lower part of the village, after we pass the church of Saint Barbara (Agia Varvara) and Our Saviour (Sotiros).
